External parasites: what they are, symptoms and how to prevent them

External parasites pose a serious threat to the health of our animals.

External parasites pose a serious threat to the health of our animals, and even to the health of our entire household, since any member of our family can fall victim to these annoying and harmful unwanted lodgers.

Apart from the harmful effects they have on our pet's health, their danger lies in the fact that certain external parasites transmit zoonoses, that is, diseases transmissible from animals to humans, such as, for example, ehrlichiosis or Lyme disease, which originate from the bite of the tick.

This type of disease transmitted by external parasites is known as vector-borne disease, because the parasites act as a vector (a reservoir or means of transport for the pathology) and are one of the main enemies of both our pet's health and that of our entire household.

What external parasites are

External parasites are organisms that carry out their vital activity attached to the surface of another living being, called the host, generally feeding off it.

Also considered external parasites are those that lodge in cavities directly connected to the outside, such as the mites Otodectes cynotis, one of the most common, which lodge in the ear canal of dogs and cats.

Symptoms of external parasites in pets

There are a multitude of symptoms that can reveal the presence of external parasites in our pet, these being mainly related to the appearance of skin problems in our animal. These include:

  • Redness
  • Inflammation
  • Itching and frequent scratching
  • Appearance of scabs and wounds
  • Hair loss

If we notice any of these symptoms, it is very important that we go to the vet so that they can carry out an examination to confirm the presence of these parasites and, if so, carry out the most appropriate deworming treatment.

Against external parasites, both prevention and visits to the vet for periodic deworming are essential, as they are extremely important for detecting some of the serious diseases they transmit in their early stages.

Prevention of external parasites

When it comes to prevention, the main measures we can take to protect our furry friend are based on preventing them from being bitten or infested by these organisms.

To this end, there are different alternatives in the form of external parasite repellents.

Most common external antiparasitic products

  • Collars
  • Spot-on pipettes
  • Sprays

With this, we will manage to reduce the risk of our pet contracting these parasites (although no alternative is 100% effective), for as long as the product's effect lasts, which varies depending on the product itself.

It is worth mentioning that pipettes are not only useful for prevention, but they also help eliminate external parasites when they are already attached to our pet.

When choosing the product that best suits your pet's needs, consult your vet, who will advise you on the most suitable alternative for your furry companion.

Treatment of external parasites

As with antiparasitic repellents, if your pet has already contracted external parasites, it is important that you visit the vet so that they can advise you and recommend the best medication or product to combat them.

There are also different medications on the market that help eliminate and combat infestations with a very high degree of effectiveness, but we stress that it is not advisable to use them without veterinary prescription.
